I imported my Jimny (JB23, 2000 model) in the spring. A few notes from my experience; rules change, so always check with the agencies yourself.
Order of operations
- Check the 25 year rule. The car must be at least 25 years old to the month of manufacture. Check the plate on the door pillar.
- Find a broker or ship direct. I used a broker who handled customs paperwork and the port release.
- Collect the documents. Bill of sale, export certificate, and a translation of the export certificate.
- Clear customs. The EPA and DOT forms are straightforward when the age exemption applies.
- Title and register. The state needed a VIN verification, the paperwork above, and proof of the import.
What I would do differently
- Budget 1,000 dollars more than the quote. Inland shipping and port fees sneak up.
- Photograph the VIN plate and engine bay before the car is loaded.
- Ask for the original deregistration certificate (抹消登録証明書) at purchase.
